1530 AD
Melchior Hoffman left Zurich and settled in The Netherlands where he introduced Anabaptism. Hoffman was a millenarian who expected Christ to return to the earth before the end of the world to establish a thousand-year kingdom where the holy would prosper and sinners would be punished.
Hoffman concluded that Christ would return to the city of Strasbourg to establish his millennial rule. Thoroughly convinced of his theory he travled to the city where he immediately began to preach and prepare for Christ’s imminent return. He was promptly jailed and executed.
Hoffman wasn’t alone in his millenarian beliefs. He had left behind his friend and confidant Jan Matthys who would stir up more trouble than Hoffman ever had.
